Public equity invests in companies that are listed on a public stock exchange while private equity invests in privately owned companies. Private equity can offer the potential for higher returns, greater diversification, and wider access to investment opportunities than public equity. Notably, private equity has different liquidity, transparency and regulatory risks, among others, than public equity.
There are many styles of private equity investing. These can often be categorised by the growth stage of the company to be invested in, for example, from early-stage venture capital such as start-up companies, to late-stage growth companies before they become publicly listed.
