Wellington Management bolsters Singapore retail offering with launch of three new actively managed equity funds

Press release

  • New investment funds focus on capital growth opportunities for the long term and are part of the firm’s efforts to expand its UCITS offerings for the wealth channel following its first retail launch in late 2021.
  • New offering meets investor demand for high-conviction, actively managed equity funds, set to capitalise on long-term investment trends, that can act as core portfolio holdings.
  • Retail investors in Singapore will have access to an ESG fund under this rollout, the Wellington Sustainable Outcomes Fund, investing primarily in companies that are driving measurable change that results in positive social and environmental outcomes.

Singapore, 1 March 2023  – Wellington Management (“Wellington” or the “firm”), one of the world’s largest independent investment management firms, today announced the launch of three new investment funds in Singapore. The three equity funds will be available to retail investors in Singapore, targeted at high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) and the mass affluent. Prior to this, Wellington introduced its first batch of retail funds in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Scott Geary, Wellington Vice Chair and Head of Client Group for Asia Pacific, said, “We are looking forward to expanding our offering of actively managed funds as core portfolio holdings to meet growing investor demand. Our local wealth channel partners, across banking, insurance and asset management, rely on us for investment excellence and competitive offerings — compelling us to extend our institutional investment offerings to their clients.”

Fund summaries

Wellington Next Generation Education Fund

Managed by Simon Henry, an expert in global thematic investing, the Fund is actively managed and seeks long-term total returns in excess of the MSCI All Country World Index.

The Fund primarily invests in companies that provide education services, and which are positioned to benefit from structural changes that will take place across global developed and emerging markets.

Wellington US Brand Power Fund

Managed by Douglas McLane, an expert in growth investing, the Fund is actively managed and seeks long-term total returns above the S&P 500 Index.

The Fund’s investment approach is based on the view that the power of a company’s brand is a key determinant of long-term value. It aims to identify high-quality companies with strong brands that also display attractive long-term growth potential and attractive fundamental characteristics.

Wellington Sustainable Outcomes Fund

Managed by Tara Stilwell, an expert in impact investing, the Fund seeks long-term total returns in excess of the MSCI All Country World Index. The Fund is actively managed, investing primarily in companies that are driving measurable change that results in positive social and environmental outcomes.

The Fund’s proprietary thematic framework consists of 11 themes, grouped under three sustainability categories (life essentials, human empowerment, and the environment), which are broadly aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (“UN SDGs”). The Fund is classified as an Article 9 fund under the EU’s Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulations.

The Fund provides exposure to companies whose products, services, business operations and activities are using scale, innovation and intentional capital allocation to drive change in the broader ecosystem. This includes their supply chains, customers and peers who, through these companies, are being influenced to also achieve measurable social and environmental outcomes.

The Fund has been recognised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore as an ESG fund for retail investors, under the new Disclosure and Reporting Guidelines for Retail ESG Funds that came into effect in January 2023.

More details about the funds and their applicable risks can be found here.

Managed by seasoned portfolio managers familiar with the needs of wealth management clients, the new funds demonstrate Wellington’s depth of proprietary research and ability to identify product gaps in the market. “The themes of education, brand power and sustainability speak to the firm’s ability to identify long-term growth drivers and structural advantages when building investment opportunity sets,” added Mr. Geary.

Wellington continues to build a comprehensive UCITS range across equities, fixed income and multi-asset for the wealth channel in Asia.
