A Day in the Life

Peter, Equity Research Analyst

My day begins by poring over the news and checking emails. As a team analyst, I cover nearly 500 small or micro cap companies, and it's crucial to begin each day by catching up with events worldwide. At the Morning Meeting, we discuss a global industry event that could be very positive for several companies under my coverage. A lively debate takes place with the global industry analysts and a regional analyst.

I continue to review market and security activity when I get in, exchanging information with others. US interest rates are rising this morning but the expectation had been flat to down. My immediate goal is to determine whether this is the start of a new trend or simply short-term volatility.

9:00 am
My team meets before the US market opening to connect with each other over a cup of coffee and review portfolio positions. We call an equity trader for input as well, and, we discuss how our portfolio stance might need to change given the events that are unfolding.

10:00 am
Management of a small cap company arrives to make a presentation to a number of analysts and portfolio managers at the firm. Revenue is now growing and the company expects to turn profitable within three years. My model supports their view, and I plan to recommend the stock to the portfolio manager of our team.

I will have two additional company management meetings today and two conference calls centered on quarterly earnings reports. The meetings are with companies that produce goods and services most of us consume in our everyday lives. It's fascinating for me to connect the brands I know so well with the managements that run those companies and to learn what makes their businesses successful.

12:30 pm
My team is hosting a discussion over lunch today to exchange ideas and views with the firm's global industry analysts. After taking some time to eat and exchange stories about our weekends, we talk about a number of new ideas. The conversation helps solidify my recommendation on the small-cap company we met in the morning.

2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Between conference calls and meetings, I talk with many colleagues on other investment and research teams about events and how they might impact the portfolio. These varied points of view have given me a richer perspective on a number of situations and will influence my recommendations. Before wrapping up for the day, I spend time analyzing a potential grant opportunity for the Wellington Management Charitable Fund.

6:00 pm
I end the day by catching up on emails. I make notes of things I'll need to do tomorrow using a new piece of technology I am testing for the systems team. The day has been full of meaningful discussions, social interaction and intellectual challenges and I have enjoyed every moment.
